Case history
In August 2002 Arwyp's maxillio-facial department made the news when a patient was literally given the gift of a new face. Fhulufhelani Netshitungulu, an 11-year-old girl from Haqmolima in Venda got the gift of a lifetime when two specialist surgeons operated on her deformed face to restore it back to normal. The Arwyp hospital management and the surgeons offered their services for free to the little girl after seeing the extent of her problem during a broadcast on television of the “Felicia on e” programme on child disfigurement. Violet Netshitungulu, the child’s mother, said the problem first came to her attention when her daughter started complaining of a sore cheek. The condition had since been with Fhulufhelani for the better part of her childhood. Annie Wypkema, marketing manager of the hospital, said she had been touched by Fhulufhelani’s condition and had decided to try to arrange for the operation to be done at the hospital. During the eight-hour operation, the face was cut and split into two in order to get to the tumour. Reconstruction of the face was done using bones from her ribs. The operation was a great success and, for the first time in nine years, Fhulufhelani could smile without being shy.
